Scranton Jewish Community Center

Scranton, PA

The Jewish Community Center of Scranton was approached by two local congregations, one Conservative and one Reform, to explore the possibility of selling their current synagogue buildings and sharing space within the existing JCC facility. The JCC asked BH+L to test the feasibility of the concept and to propose options for review and discussion. The various options included finding space entirely within the existing building while providing each congregation with its own identity; designing an addition to the JCC to accommodate new worship spaces while maintaining a separate entrance for the two congregations; and designing a separate building in the parking lot, raised up to avoid losing parking spaces and close enough to the JCC to allow convenient access to some shared space.

The project's initial phase focused on the renovation of the JCC building to provide a new elevator, upgraded systems and finishes, and a renovated pool and locker rooms.
