Following an Existing Conditions Study, BH+L explored a number of options for an addition to this historic synagogue that would provide a more spacious and accessible entrance, modern toilet rooms, stroller storage and a new design for the awkward and deteriorating exterior steps. As part of the exercise, the building’s lower level, containing a multipurpose space, was redesigned to include classrooms that can be created using moveable partitions.
With the approval of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, a new monumental exterior stair, sympathetic to the design of the original building, replaced a steep, crumbling stair that was no longer being used.
